Not too long ago at the beginning of June 2010 the 5th Annual Online Bingo Summit was once again hosted in London. One of the topics of discussion was whether online bingo has reached saturation point. In the year preceding this summit, the amount of UK facing sites has grown from 265 to 324, and more are still going live, virtually every week.
While many of these are on the same software platform, for example Dragonfish, this is still creating cause for concern. How many news sites can this market comfortably handle before saturation point is reached?
Newspapers have long been involved in online bingo, but retail stores have yet to come live online in this genre. However it appears they are the next logical operators to follow the bingo trends and there is talk of both Next and Tesco going live online in a matter of time.
Personally I don't think this is a bad thing, but it may create a war of attrition, with the smaller operators unable to compete. I also don't think this is a bad thing because there are only a handful of sites that are market leaders in the provision of promotions.
Some of the best networked sites for prizes are Dragonfish and St. Minver. Also the group of four sites comprising Wink, Posh, Red Bus and Tasty Bingo is very good, Tombola and Sun Bingo are brilliant as well as Foxy Bingo and its close relative Think Bingo, Cozy gaming sites are OK but don't have as much to offer as the other sites.
Having retail stores provide online bingo may just be the push the crappy sites need to either get out of the business or rethink their benchmarks. They will provide more competition which is not a bad thing and I personally believe there is a long way to go before saturation point is reached.
